Neuromuscular Dentistry Questions
Neuromuscular Dentistry Directory
What is neuromuscular dentistry?
It's a type of dentistry that includes more in its focus than just teeth and gums. It looks at the entire jaw joint system - bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, etc. - as well as teeth and gums, and considers how they are all functioning together in your particular case. A neuromuscular dentist works on your bite, known as your occlusion, meaning the way your teeth come together when you close your mouth. A bad bite (malocclusion) is another name for Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMD or TMJ), a painfully misaligned jaw joint which can be diagnosed and treated by a neuromuscular dentist.
How are neuromuscular problems treated?
Because the goal of neuromuscular dentistry is to correct your bite and realign your jaw, an experienced neuromuscular dentist will determine your correct jaw position by measuring the relaxed position of your jaw muscles. He or she will then use state of the art technology to reposition your jaw so that it is always relaxed when not being used. Part of the treatment may be reshaping or repositioning of some teeth.
Is neuromuscular dentistry right for me?
Neuromuscular dentistry may be helpful if you are suffering from TMD symptoms or to aid in establishing your bite for the placement of a bridge or dentures.
What are the benefits of neuromuscular dentistry?
Neuromuscular dentistry will help decrease pain and discomfort caused by TMD, as well as promote better overall oral health and longer lasting dental restorations.
